To the right you will notice a cut-out of the Time magazine article that featured the
Cortes Signet Ring, along with other treasure found on our wreck including the Isabella
Emerald, the Rose Quartz Skull, and some other rings. This article is from
October 25, 1993 Time Magazine (the International Issue).
The Cortes Signet Ring is one of the most significant historical finds from
our wreck. The original owner was Hernando Cortes, the Conquistador sent to
Mexico by the King of Spain in 1519. On the face of the ring is the family
crest of the Cortes family after he married into the Zuniga family. The two
coat of arms on the ring represent each family in the marriage.
When Cortes would send letters back to the King,
he would seal the letter with hot wax, and then stamp it with his signet ring
(or "signature ring")
When the letter was received in Spain, the King's magistrate would examine the
seal to make sure that in fact it was Cortes who was sending the letter and that
the letter was not tampered with.

Silver bars and faceless silver coins were melted down and
a limited edition of 1000 Signet Rings were created.
